The Game Has Changed: The Virtual Hip Hop Scene

Buildings are shuttered and events are cancelled. Reality has sunk in. The world has changed. Some things may never be the same. But in this new reality, some are finding new ways to change the way we build Hip Hop Culture. From DJs spinning livestream to virtual dance classes, in many ways, the global quarantine has brought so much talent and creativity to our fingertips. In this month’s blog, we take a look at some of the game changers finding new ways to keep pushing the c

    Open Practice

For the past 8 years, The Bboy Factory has given away over 10 hours every week of Open Practice space. During these hours, we allow our community to use our space to train their individual skills. A small box is put out to collect donations, but we do not pressure anyone to pay. For a small business to give away our resources is a huge sacrifice and does not make a lot of sense. Every month we have to pay for rent, utilities, insurance, music licensing, instructors, advertisi

    5 Steps to Creativity

This blog post is to help all the Breakers who tune in for inspiration. It is for Bboys and Bgirls who know how to work hard at practice. But sometimes, we can lose motivation and it can be difficult to find a spark to create new movement. Just like a writer who gets “writer’s block,” this can happen to any artist. This piece is dedicated to creating style and moves when you feel stuck in your training. Here are 5 ways to help you create moves and stay creative when you don’t

    Seeing 2020

This time of year calls on us to look back and reflect on the journey that brought us to today. 2019 was a dynamic year at The Bboy Factory, full of exciting changes and growth. Challenges beckoned us to mature and consider the legacy we are building for our future. Even as we take a moment to reflect on the year that has passed, we stay present and focused on the incredible things coming in 2020. The Bboy Factory enters this new decade with a clear vision of ourselves, our i

    Bgirl AsiaOne Interview

The Bboy Factory has been blessed to form friendships with many icons in the Breakin world, from Ivan the Urban Action Figure, to Roxrite, Skeme Richands, Menno, Kwikstep and more. Having such influential dancers endorse our movement has been key to our international reputation and students’ success. One Bgirl has been beyond generous towards us with her time and energy, the world famous, AsiaOne. Coming up in the late 90’s, Bboy Summit was one of, if not the biggest event on

    My Inspiration: Tiny Toones

I wrote this in 2011, a little less than a year before opening The Bboy Factory. This experience is largely what inspired me to start the Bboy Factory... In 1973, a DJ named Kool Herc, threw a series of parties in a park between project buildings in the Bronx, New York City. He had immigrated from Jamaica bringing with him the "dub" sound and production process. Dub music was primarily made by remixing instrumental versions of reggae songs to emphasize the drum and the bass,

Competitive Breakin' League 2019 National Championships

Last weekend The Bboy Factory flew out to Washington DC for the Competitive Breakin' League National Championship. I was invited to judge and workshop. We also had our Youth Team of Roman and Savonn and Teen competitor Henry make the trip, who all qualified at the Rocky Mountain Regional back in March. The Competitive Breakin' League is a national league designed to present Breakin' as a "Dance Sport." The league holds 4 regional competitions leading up to the National Champi

    Break the Bay

Last weekend The Bboy Factory took a team of competitors to Oakland, California to compete at Break the Bay. Last year, event organizer, community leader, and super fresh DJ Delrokz came out to Denver for our Bboy Factory 6th Anniversary and we decided to return the support by making the trip to California for his event. We took our crew, Ironlungs, for the 5 vs 5. I personally wanted to take a moment to share some of our experience. Ironlungs is not a "super crew," although
